Ceiling fans are very efficient using as much power as a 100W bulb at full speed. Owning a ceiling fan not only helps keep you cool, but it helps keep your electricity bill cool too. Running the ceiling fan during the summer with your air conditioning on will help circulate cooled air to make your air conditioning more efficient. Running the ceiling fan in reverse during the winter helps circulate warm air around the room, helping you lower your heating bill as well.
Never use a light dimmer to run a ceiling fan motor. Using a dimmer will cause noise and can damage your fan motor or components.
Fans may move due to poor quality or poor installation, but not just from hanging from a pole. Ceiling fans on long poles are not prone to move any more than ceiling fans on short poles. If a fan wobbles the installer can typically spend a few extra minutes to either reduce or minimize the movement.
Ceiling fans keep you cool not by lowering the temperature in you room but by creating a wind chill effect as air moves against your skin. Its the same principle as feeling a gentle breeze on a hot day. The benefit of using a fan in winter depends where you live. If you use a furnace often during the winter a fan can be beneficial if you have higher ceilings. Hot air rises and a ceiling fan running in reverse direction gently mixes the air in a room. This mixing really is the principle of the fan conserving energy based on the reduced use of your heating or cooling system. A ceiling fan often lets you eliminate or reduce your use of air conditioning for cooling during summer, and lets you reduce the temperature setting on your furnace during winter. The result is a reduced use of energy which saves you money. Ceiling fans also solve airflow problems in certain areas.
Inexpensive ceiling fans often develop sound. Higher quality ceiling fans can be repaired but inexpensive promotional fans need to be replaced when a problem occurs.
Most ceiling fans allow for the use of a fan light, which can be added when you install your fan (or at a later date)
